On the freedom scale Haiti was given a 4.5, this is rated as Partly Free. This could be due to the many deaths that seemed to overcome the small country. In 2010 an earthquake hit Haiti, near Port-au-Prince. In 2010 into 2011 an epidemic of Cholera cause a great deal of deaths.
During 2010, there was a 7-scale earthquake in Haiti. The death toll was counted above 200,000 civilians, there were as many as 300,000 injured. To the contrary of my previous thoughts the freedom status of Haiti did not change after the earthquake.
Also during 2010 there were reports of fraud, voter intimidation, and violations of electoral law present during the Presidential and Parliamentary elections held in November. After President Michel Martelly was elected, it became evident that he lacked the majority support of the legislature. This leads to many important decisions not being made.
Ten months after the fatal Earthquake in Haiti, an epidemic of Cholera was reported. Cholera is an intestinal disease, which leads to dehydration. This epidemic lead to 470,000 reported cases, and 6,631deaths.
After 2010, 40.6% of population was unemployed. 80% of the population is below the poverty line. In December of 2012 the Senators of Haiti voted the suspension of Mining Permits in Haiti, on the basis that the permits were awarded outside of legal norms. These changes lead to the lessening of the amount of money made in Haiti.
